Are things that bad...

He's the new JJ but version 2.0. He used to be the national sales trainer but he's been made the head of customer care. He's awesome and he's already made a ton of changes for the better. He really is interested in having you come back, potentially without having to be a temp-to-hire.. right back where you left... With us.. Dude, Jesse... you should come back. Seriously consider it, okay?
If I was you, I would stay where you are. Obviously you're happy and your boss is awesome. There are some intangibles that may not be quantifiable, but add a lot to your job. You'd just be miserable if you came back and you know it.
